How to Make DIY Natural Bedroom Drawer Fresheners

DIY homemade air fresheners are great; however, sometimes you just want your clothing to be freshened up a little. A homemade drawer freshener isn't a new concept, but they are an easy, economical, and eco-friendly way of adding a clean, fresh scent to your dresser drawers.

Though scented drawer fresheners might sound like something your grandmother would have made and used, they're actually the perfect natural products to help keep your drawers fresh and free of pests like moths and silverfish. Here is a simple and quick DIY tutorial on how to make your own natural bedroom drawer fresheners that not only smell terrific, but also repel bugs.

Your Guide to DIY Natural Bedroom Drawer Fresheners

  1. Pouch

Decide on the fabric you're going to use, and begin making the pouch. Fold the rectangular fabric piece over, so you have the pattern on the inside. Now, sew the outer two sides together.

Choose any type of stitch you want, but make sure it's going to hold. If your sewing skills aren't the best, you could try fabric repair adhesive. Just apply a light application, since it spreads as you're smoothing the edges. Turn the pattern-side of the pouch out, and place it to the side.

  1. Scents

You can use dried flowers, dried herbs, and rice. Combine the herbs or dried flowers and rice together. There are many delightful scents:

  • Rose
  • Lavender
  • Vanilla
  • Eucalyptus

Find one you like. If you can't seem to find the scent you're looking for in a dried plant, you can use a couple drops of essential oil, and mix it in the rice until you've achieved the level of scent you desire.

Essential oils won't all last as long as chemical concoctions. But, there are certain essential oils that will last longer than others. Certain essential oils are thought of as "top notes", and evaporate quicker than "base notes." Some top notes examples are:

  • Peppermint
  • Citrus oils
  • Eucalyptus

Some examples of base notes that last longer, and are usually a woodsy and earthy scent, are:

  • Amyris
  • Frankincense
  • Cedarwood
  • Patchouli
  • Ginger
  • Benzoin

You can even combine scents.

You have many choices for making DIY bedroom drawer fresheners. Some ideas are:

  • Rose herb with orange and ylang ylang essential oil
  • Lavender herb with bergamot and lavender essential oil
  • Dried orange peel with juniper and cedarwood essential oil
  • Lavender herb with geranium and ylang ylang essential oil

Be sure you’re using only quality essential oils to not only enjoy a longer-lasting scent, but for education on safe use and reputation for transparency. Not to mention, quality essential oils are typically pure, steam distilled, or cold-pressed, which means there is no use of chemicals in their production like there often is with store-bought essential oils.

  1. Fill. Fill up your pouch with your scented rice mixture.
  1. Tie

Once you've filled your pouch, use a colorful ribbon to tie the top. Use pinking shears to finish the fabric at the top. You can use a thick layer of clear nail polish to coat the edge, and keep the top from fraying.

That’s All There Is To It

This is all there is too making your own DIY homemade bedroom dresser drawer fresheners. Experiment with different scents. Make several of them, so when one wears out, you can just pop another one in.

You can also make these as cute gifts to give away to friends and family, or use them in your bed pillow, so you can enjoy the scent as you sleep in your Eco Terra natural latex mattress. They’re fun to make, and don’t take very long. You can store the left-over ingredients in a repurposed jar, which will keep them fresh.
